A budget trip has never been just a cheap tickets. It’s about getting the most bang for your buck — selecting destinations where airfare is manageable, local costs aren’t exorbitant and the experience isn’t a sacrifice. The challenge is that most travellers depend on word of mouth, old listicles, or gut instinct when choosing a destination. FareArena has gone a different way.

We’re excited to share that we’ve just released our first Cheapest International Destinations Report — a data-driven ranking of the cheapest places to fly to around the globe right now, using actual airfare trends, average ticket prices, and live booking data gathered on the platform during the first half of 2026. The report analysed fare data from over 4.2 million searches and 190 international routes to pinpoint destinations where budget travellers can consistently expect the lowest prices, the most available inventory, and the best overall value per mile flown.
The Destinations Budget Travelers Should Be Booking Right Now
The report’s findings challenge the assumption that budget travel comes at the expense of destination quality. Many of the most affordable top cities are also some of the most visited and most celebrated travel destinations in their regions—they just haven’t been priced out yet.
Kathmandu, Nepal was the top ranked city in the Asia-Pacific region with average round-trip fares from major Western hubs 41% lower than the regional average. Kathmandu is ridiculously cheap compared to other adventure travel hubs, despite being the gateway to some of the world’s most famous trekking routes.
Latin America continued to have the continent’s best budget travel value for the second straight reporting period in Medellín, Colombia. However, despite a huge increase in the city’s international profile, average inbound fares from North America have remained stubbornly low, primarily due to a number of low-cost carriers operating the route at high frequency
Africa had some of the most interesting results in the report. Nairobi, Kenya and Addis Ababa, Ethiopia were the two most accessible African capitals for budget travellers flying from Europe and North America. Addis Ababa benefitted from Ethiopian Airlines’ expanding hub model that keeps fares competitive on dozens of long-haul routes.
What the Booking Data Reveals About Budget Travel Behavior
Beyond destination rankings, the FareArena report also dives into the key trends in how budget travellers actually book, and where the biggest savings are consistently found.
Those who booked international flights to the report’s top ten destinations 45-60 days in advance paid 26% less on average than those who booked two weeks prior to travel. That advance booking premium was 33% on routes to Southeast Asia and East Africa in particular, showing just how much timing still counts even on routes that are generally affordable.
“Budget travellers who used multi-city search tools also saved an average of $112 per booking over those who used standard round-trip search tools, the data also showed.” By taking itineraries through secondary hubs rather than primary international gateways, these travellers found inventory that direct searches often miss, especially on routes through Addis Ababa, Doha and Kuala Lumpur, all of which act as high-value connection points to reach cheap long-haul destinations.
Travel budget 2026 is smarter than ever before
FareArena’s report basically says that the conditions for budget international travel are really good at the moment. On many routes to emerging markets, capacity has been growing faster than demand, keeping fares competitive. Low-cost carrier networks have penetrated markets previously controlled by full-service airlines with higher base fares. And comparison tools have made it easier than ever to find the best available price without spending hours manually checking multiple booking platforms.
